Evaluation Q3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
A good media instition that might distribute my product would be one that has had success with distributing low-budget thriller films. From my research I feel that ‘Kaleidoscope Film Distribution’ would be the best company and I feel that they would be very interested in my film.

The reason I decided to choose this company because 'at just three years, KFD is a one-stop-shop offering full UK and international distribution and sales capabilities, and is one of the fastest-growing independents in the market.' Their previous films are mostly horror thrillers, such as Willow Creek, which was a success. As my film contains this subgenre I feel that this company would have the best advice and experience as to how to market and distribute my film. Furthermore, KFD like to work with emerging talent, which gives me hope that they will distribute and see success in my film.

Evaluation Q7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Preliminary task
From our preliminary task (as linked above) I believe we have done a good job by adding more camera shots and editing techniques to add suspense.
In the preliminary task, we only used a few shots, and they are fairly simple as well. However in our full product, we added a lot more complex shots such as a pan, which added suspense and gave the audience more of a view on what was happening. We also figured how to use the tripod properly, so we were able to film creative shots and angles in our final product. Overall, I discovered how the camera angles can be used as a method of representing a character and how much power they have on screen. In my final product, I also managed to find a good backing track that will provide an eerie atmosphere because in the preliminary task, I don't think the background music used managed to create a tense atmosphere. The final improvement I felt I made when moving to the main task was that I made sure that the characters were speaking clearly when filming. In my preliminary task some of the sound seemed distorted and it was unclear as to what they had said. However after saying this when filming the main task I felt the sound was clear and easy to understand.
Editing was also improved in the main task as I incorporated stylish titles at the beginning to make the product look more professional. I felt the titles looked good, however it would have been better if there were more. The last improvement to the editing was adding smoother transitions in order for the clips to flow and give a good sense of continuity. I also adjusted the brightness and contrast in my final product, which I didn't do in my preliminary task, and I believe they added a good effect. However, in some scenes it may have been too dark, so it might be hard for the audience to see what is happening.
Overall improvements that were made were that I did not want to overcomplicate the narrative and prioritised making it easier to follow. However saying this I felt another improvement that I made was showing details with the audience that would not be visible in the preliminary task. An example of this was explaining the plot so that the audience was not confused at all.

Evaluation Q6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
Duing the production of our product, I spent around half an hour with the camera, so I figured out how to work it properly. I managed to get my head around the focus on the camera, so I could get it in and out of focus at will. The camera was tricky to work out because it has a lot of buttons, but I was able to find out how to adjust the white balance on it, so I used it in the darker scenes in our film. We also used the tripod in a lot of scenes, so we were able to use it wisely and get some effective shots in our clip.
I also learnt how to use adobe premiere pro during the production of our clip, and I used it to piece the clips together, and use a variety of editing techniques. One of our scenes had to be filmed on a different day because it was a poor quality, but when we filmed it again, it was lighter outside then when we filmed it before. I had to adjust the brightness and contrast of the scene to fit the other clips. I also added transitions into our products such as the fading in and out of some shots, which I believe made our clip more eerie and added suspense. Furthermore, we added the titles on adobe premiere pro, and although they use a simple, basic font, I believe they add to the tension in the clip and make it more unpredictable. Also, other horror thrillers such as 'The Silence of the Lambs' use simple titles to add emphasis to the killer, and make them seem more deranged. In addition, I used fireworks to create the 'Loading Productions' logo at the start of the clip, and I believe the states used give a flow to the logo, and it is effective.
