Evaluation Q1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
I believe my media product uses many conventions of real thriller products and we aimed to create a tense, dark thriller using conventions. The antagonist is meant to frighten the audience and give a horror feel to our thriller.
Throughout our thriller, there is tense music being played, which we added to unnerve the audience and create suspense. Tense music is used in many real media products such as Se7en to get the audience off their seats and frighten them. Furthermore, there is a lot of low key lighting in our product, which makes the protagonist, Fred, look exposed to the dark character of the killer. An example of this is from my opening is when the victim feels there is something outside and he decides to take a look in his garden. It is dark outside and he decides to take a look in his garden. It is dark outside and not much detail is available to see for the viewer. This creates tension with the audience as they are anticipating a climax.
Our media product also uses shadows in some scenes, which are also used in real horror thrillers such as 'The Cabin in the Woods,' where they give a dark feel to the movie. The effect means that the viewer only gets glimpses of the killer and not a whole picture of their identity.
In the editing stage of our product, we added the diegetic sound of breathing. This effect is used when the killer is spying on Fred, and it gives the audience another glimpse of the killer character, yet we still don't see it, this creates even more suspense.
The next convention outlined is quick cuts. I feel this convention is very effective in this thriller as it makes the audience jump and puts them in a place of shock. I used this convention in my thriller to give the opening a scare factor and grab the viewers attention. An example of this is at the end when we reach the climax of the scene. It shows the killer getting closer and closer to the camera.

Mise en Scene/Props

Fajit
List of props
  • Car - We need the car for the opening scene, and it also shows the audience that Fred has a normal lifestyle
  • Pig mask
  • Dog
  • Note 'Oink Oink' - creates an uneasy atmosphere
  • Knife and toast
  • Laptop
  • Security light

This sheet shows our plan of the mise en scene that we recorded in lesson, and it helped us organise ourselves and get a list of what we needed for filming. The security light is extremely important as it provides a spotlight in some scenes, and it adds tension when it is in the background of some scenes. In addition, we need my dog in a scene because  the innocence of her character contrasts with the dark character of piggy.

The credits appear on screen for the first production company, in the iconic yellow-
orange pulp fiction colour and distinctive font. The use of the iconic colour and distinctive font displays set against the upbeat brass sounding soundtrack of ‘Dick Dales – Misirlou’ gives the audience an idea of pulp fictions ironic mixture of humour and violence that awaits. After the main title 'Pulp Fiction' is displayed in big, bold letters, the list of actors is shown, with the main title slowing fading in the background. In this opening sequence, the names of the actors appear early on in the clip. This is mostly likely because the actors are well established and well known. The unique font and the introduction of another iconic song 'jungle boogie' by Retro and the gang, gives the audience a feel of the unique funky vibe of Pulp fiction; instantly setting the mood.

Filming schedule

We aim to film everything on one night after school before it gets dark. I believe we can everything filmed in around 2 hours, and when near to the end of the 2 hours it will be pitch black, so we can film the darker scenes. I think 2 hours is enough to film everything to a high standard, and filming on other days as well will just make filming more difficult due to the layout of the house.
In this filming session, for the equipment we will need a camera and a tripod. The props that we need will be: a car, a note saying 'Oink', a laptop, bread, a toaster, and a Peppa pig DVD that will be played on the laptop. Jake and I will both be needed to be there at this filming session, and Elly Ongoma will be coming to help us out in some scenes. We will also need my dog to be in the house during a couple of scenes as well. For the costumes, Jake will need all black clothing and the pig mask, and I will need tracksuit bottoms and a hoodie.
